MKV files (Matroska) are essentially containers that package video, audio, and subtitle files together.
To extract these files, you need the MKV Extract software.
This method is more effective and faster than using video conversion software (which cannot extract subtitle files and often reduces the original video quality).
Software that can Extract (decompress) and Multiplex (merge) files:
Among the 4 software tools, MKVtoolnix is a must-have. The other 3 tools rely on the MKV Toolnix codec to function.
However, MKV Toolnix does not have the Extract (decompress) feature for MKV files, it only has the Multiplex (merge) feature.
On the other hand, the other 3 tools can extract but do not support multiplexing.
You can download MKV Toolnix for free at: mkvtoolnix.download
